Current Population Trends of Durham Region

Each city, township and municipality (except Brock) in Durham Region experienced a growth in population according to the results of the 2011 Canadian Census.

From the years 2006 to 2011, Durham Region grew from 561,258 inhabitants five years ago, to 608,124, an increase of 8.4%.  This is moderately higher than the numbers for the entire Province of Ontario, which increased 6.1% to a population of 11,410,046.  Canada, in comparison, only increased by 4.0% to 30,007,094.

In Durham Region, the greatest growth was in the Town of Ajax, which increased 21.56% in just five year to 109,600.  The only Municipality in Durham Region to drop in population, was the Township of Brock which dropped 5.32% to 11,341 citizens.

Here is the 2011 population of each of Durham's Municipalities, 2006 numbers are in parentheses:

  • The City of Pickering:  88,721 (87,838), 1.01% increase

  • The Town of Ajax:  109,600 (90,167), 21.56% increase

  • The Town of Whitby:  122,022 (111,184), 9.75% increase

  • The City of Oshawa:  149,607 (141,590), 5.66% increase

  • The Municipality of Clarington:  84,548 (77,820), 8.65% increase

  • The Township of Uxbridge:  20,623 (19,169), 7.59% increase

  • The Township of Scugog:  21,569 (21,439), 0.61% increase

  • The Township of Brock:  11,341 (11,979), 5.32% decrease
